Discovering Gifts and Calling: Interactive Workshop for Lakeside

February 18th, 2018 (by Nathan Brewer) // The apostle Paul exhorts in Ephesians 4:1, “…I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received…” But what if you don’t know the calling you have received, or the gifts that help you live a life worthy of it?

What if you could discover the calling God has on your life? As part of your identity, what if you could discover the way God wired you? Discover the gifts he has given you to serve people with power and love?

Despite the fact that this is often a lifelong process, that’s exactly what we set out to kickoff for the participants of the workshop from Lakeside Aspern Church in Vienna. Insa, Laura, Danny and myself led the group through an interactive process Friday evening and all day Saturday, with additional video contributions from team members Rebecca and Sebastian.

Based on Scripture in Ephesians 4:1-16, we as a team unpacked each of the five giftings — apostle/apostolic, prophet/prophetic, evangelism/evangelistic, shepherd/shepherding, and teacher/teaching — shedding new light on their meanings and how they look like in modern day ministry and life. What are the strengths of each? How about the weaknesses? Who do they need around them to compliment them? How do they all integrate to reveal the fullness of Christ?

Participants enjoyed the weekend, assembling their own gifting profile, learning how to explain this concept of Jesus fivefold ministry to others, and being activated through group exercises in each area. One great example of this was the prophetic exercise we did with them, where people struggled at the beginning, but then were left speechless, teary-eyed, or encouraged through the roof afterwards.

Only through recognition and activation can the growth in Ephesians 4:16 become a reality:
“…from Jesus, the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”

We enjoyed the time with Lakeside and appreciated the hunger and readiness to learn. They have lots of potential to flourish in these areas. According to their feedback, they enjoyed it too!

“It was very entertaining with the different people presenting. I’m taking away from the workshop a whole new understanding and approach to the theme of the prophetic.” – Peter

“I learned that each of the five gifts is present in me already in a certain proportion.” – Tom

“I liked the exercises. I got to know my gifts better.” – Patrick

“I finally found my place to serve in the church.” – Katharina

“Thanks so much lovely team! The investment for the workshop was really worth it!” – Tom Gangl, church planter Lakeside Aspern
